Oneg Shabbat – Joy of Shabbat
“… if you call Shabbat a delight … (Isaiah 58:13).”
“And let us keep paying attention to one another, in order to spur each other on to love and good deeds, not neglecting our own congregational meeting, as some have made a practice of doing, but, rather, encouraging each other (Hebrews 10:24-25).”

Each Shabbat after our congregational meeting a meal is offered free of charge in the
fellowship hall to anyone who wants to come, and on some Shabbats the aroma from the
food floating up the stairwell into the sanctuary makes the oneg all the more enticing.
However, is filling our stomachs the only reason we enjoy the oneg?
Oneg Shabbat literally means joy of Shabbat and is based on Isaiah 58:13. Adonai wants us
to call His Shabbat a joy, and the oneg is one way among many to enter into the joys of
Shabbat. More than food, we gather with other believers to fellowship engaging in
meaningful conversation and a time of getting to know one another as we develop a like-
minded community in the midst of an ever more polarized culture.
At oneg, families and individuals can sit down together taking time to enjoy one another
while partaking in a delicious meal. As Adonai calls us to put aside our cares of the week on
Shabbat, we also put aside the rushing and busyness that consumes the six days of our work
week. We can look one another in the eye paying attention to others as stories of our lives
are shared. It is during these times that trust and friendships in the congregation are built and
nourished just as our bodies are nourished with food.
Adonai created Shabbat for man. Let’s enjoy every aspect of it from praise and worship,
instruction in Adonai’s word and the believer’s fellowship, for it is a fellowship that we
cannot live without. Adonai designed us for relationship and that relationship provides
accountability, enouragement and love that we cannot find solely within ourselves.
